Schafberg Mountain Railway

The historic steam powered cog-railway takes you to the mountain top

Since 1893, the steepest steam powered rack railway in Austria has run from St. Wolfgang up to the Schafberg ("Sheep Mountain").

In 40 minutes you cover 1190 metres of altitude and 5.85 km. These steam engines are some of the oldest in the world.

Even after 100 years this steam locomotive is still extremely popular.

600.000 people use the Schafberg cog railway every year to enjoy the fantastic view from the top of Mount Schafberg.

The over 100 year old Schafberg mountain railway, boat trips, echoes of Austria's Emperor Franz-Josef, Sissi, Romanticism, operetta, literature-the tradition of St. Wolfgang  - an experience you'll never forget!
