For several centuries, Salzburg's prince archbishops represented the secular and spiritual power of the province. Even today, many impressive historical monuments, built with the riches of salt mining, provide a reminder of their rule. The ornate architectural masterpieces of very well-known artists and architects from several periods continue to define the city as we see it today. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is Salzburg's most famous son and grew up here.

The United Nations also recognised the value of Salzburg's old town and have placed it under their protection as a world heritage site, not least because the world's most famous musician was born here.

Of particular interest are the wrought iron, often gold-plated guild signs from the 16th - 19th centuries whose design probably originated during the Middle Ages. Ornate facades, picturesque arcaded courtyards.

The Getreidegasse, site of Mozart's birthplace, lies in the heart of Austria's finest shopping district.

The "festival quarter" is located at the foot of the Mönchsberg. The Small Festival Hall was built in 1924/1925. The Large Festival Hall was built to designs by Clemens Holzmeister from 1956-1960. The Felsenreitschule (Summer Riding School) was built in 1693 to plans by Fischer von Erlach. Site of the annual Salzburg Festival's main performances.

The "Pferdeschwemme" (an extravagant watering point for horses) was built in 1695 by Michael Bernhard Mandl.
