Hohensalzburg
Fortress, built in 1077
by Archbishop Gebhard, and considerably enlarged by
Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach (1495-1519), is the
largest fully preserved fortress in central Europe.
The medieval princes' apartments and the Fortress Museum
are of particular interest.
Since
1892 a funicular railway from
the Festungsgasse has made it easy to reach the fortress.
Hohensalzburg Fortress is not only one of the most-visited
tourist attractions in Austria, but also the venue
for chamber music concerts.
Internationally renowned performers play classical music in
the atmospheric surroundings of the fortress. Bring a fascinating
day of sightseeing to a close with your own personal
Salzburg Festival!
