The tradition of erecting the maypole is celebrated a bit different in each region. In general it is about a huge tree or trunk which is decorated and erected on the 1st of May in the centre of each village (also here in Grödig). Before erecting the maypole it is usually carried through the village accompanied by a local marching band. In the past men had to erect the tree themselves but nowadays they often use machines as well. 1st of May is celebrated the whole day and of course there is plenty of traditional Austrian food and a lot of beer! Also the traditional “Dirdnl” Dress and the “Lederhose” is a must-have on this day!
