Thursday, January 24th, 2013 Bobsled –Taxi at the lake Königssee

Have you always dreamed of sleding down an ice track with 100 km/h? Well, then you at the right place at the Luge Track at the lake Königssee!

The village Schönau at the lake Königssee is close to the Hotel Sallerhof in Grödig. Only 18 km separate our cosy hotel from the adventurous ice track. The ice track is about 4265 ft long and the difference in altitude is about 360 ft. The bobsled is made of foam rubber and carries up to 4 persons (at least one of them needs to have experience in bobsledding).

The price for one person/ride is 30 Euro and except a pair of gloves and a little courage you need nothing else! From December until February you can make reservations for bobsled, on the homepage of the tourist information of Schönau: http://www.koenigssee.com/en/bobrafting-bobsleding.htm.

Saturday, January 19th, 2013 Snow-Shoe Hiking

The most beautiful thing during winter are the snowy landscapes. One way to enjoy those landscapes is by snow-shoe hiking!

With the snow-shoes on your feet you can walk easily through the enchanting winter landscapes of Salzburg. Previous knowledge and experience in snow-shoeing is not necessary but you should bring walking boots and winter clothes. Snow-shoeing is only allowed with the company of professional local guides, who ensure your safety during the hike.

With pleasure we can help you make arrangements for a guided hiking tour, with our business partner crocodile sports. (http://www.crocodile-sports.com/en/activities/winter/snowshoe.html)

Thursday, January 10th, 2013 Mozartweek 2013

From January 24th until February 3rd the Mozart festival takes places.

This popular music-festival is interpreting mostly music from the famous Salzburg composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Several known orchestras like the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (George Prêtre), the Camerata Salzburg (Louis Langrée), the Emerson String Quartet, Les Musiciens du Louvre Grenoble (Marc Minkowski) as well as the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (Sir Simon Rattles) are going to play the music of W.A. Mozart.

Therefore the Mozart festival is the only festival at present that engages with the music of Mozart that much. This year one piece really stands out: the interpretation of Mozarts Drama per musica Lucio silla by Marc Minkowski. As every year, there also will be shows in the historic buildings that Mozart used to live at.

Thursday, January 3rd, 2013 Traditional Start in the New Year

The new year in Salzburg starts with a curious tradtion- the Glöcklerlauf:

In the night from the 5th to 6th January, the so called last Rauhnacht (the last of the Twelve Nights, that concludes Christmas) a procession takes place.

Men, dressed in white clothes, wearing belts with heavy bells and headdresses, that are lighted from inside out, wander the streets. They start their procession in the district Kleingmain at 7 pm. and walk to the city center of Salzburg, where the procession ends at about 9 pm.

In former times, the procession was believed to chase away the cold and darkness and invite light and warmth to come back. The men with their amazing, bright headpieces create a wonderful and mystical scenery that is worth seeing!
